My Approach

Neurodevelopmental disorders are often complex and there is significant overlap between them. It is important to have a good quality assessment to ensure the entire profile of a child’s strengths and needs is evaluated and a good plan to address the needs is made. This is why I work closely with a team of professionals to ensure quality assessments are completed to high standards and timely.

In my years of experience, I have observed that rarely children fit the descriptions in the books.  Often there is focus only in one area of development or need. But this does not help define the overall profile of the child.

Hence, I aim to offer a holistic approach to assessments, making them multidisciplinary, when needed. I aim to offer a senior opinion on the next steps in support and clinical evaluation of the child. It is not uncommon for families to seek an experienced clinician’s opinion, when also applying for an Education, Health and Care plan. (It is important to check that the area you live would accept private assessments. Although many do, some do not).

I see patients who are generally under the age of 11 years, who have developmental difficulties. These may be affecting their functioning at home or school, their behaviour and emotional wellbeing.

  • When a child’s development is delayed or disordered. This may be in one area, such as language, or in more domains, with the effect of this affectong the child’s other skills, attainment in other areas, behaviour and wellbeing.

  • When delay in development may be part of a wider, yet unrecognised disorder, such as a genetic syndrome.

  • When concerns around development, attention, behaviour or communication is suspected to be part of a wider disorder, including disorders such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Apart from my long experience in paediatrics, I am also extensively trained in structured tools to explore differences, such as the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R), to assess development, including the Schedule of Growing Skills (SOGS II) and Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales and in the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS II).
